History

Airbus moved into the VIP airliner market in 1997, setting itself against Boeing's Business Jet programme. The base aircraft was the A319, which had first flown in 1995 and joined the Swissair fleet in April 1996. The FAA certified the corporate version in 2002. Conversion added removable fuel tanks in the hold, and the certified ceiling went up to 41,000 feet.

Airbus made it the lead model of its corporate jet range. Carrying eight passengers, it has a range of as much as 6,000 nautical miles, and the cabin can be divided into as many as six zones, used for bedrooms, dining rooms or lounges as each customer prefers. Standard layouts seat 18, with certification for up to 39.

In May 2011 the A319CJ was renamed the ACJ319 and marketed as Elegance, and in 2018 Airbus introduced the ACJ319neo with new-generation engines and more range. The original model stayed in production from 1997 to 2021 and remains a common choice among government and corporate operators around the world.

FAQ

ACJ or Boeing Business Jet: how do they differ?

The ACJ cabin is slightly wider, which gives more freedom when planning the interior. The BBJ generally has more range, and more of them are in service worldwide. Since each is built from a commercial airliner, both give you much more cabin space than a conventional business jet, so the decision usually rests on your routes and the layout you want.

What does the ACJ319neo change?

The neo keeps the classic ACJ319's cabin cross-section but adds Sharklet wingtips and new-generation engines, either the CFM LEAP-1A or the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G. Together they cut fuel consumption by as much as 15 per cent, and the aircraft is quieter with lower emissions. Cabin comfort and layout options are unchanged.

Where does the ACJ319 sit against the ACJ318 and ACJ320?

It is the middle model. A longer fuselage and more range than the ACJ318 make it a true intercontinental aircraft. The ACJ320 offers a longer cabin and can take extra fuel tanks, but it costs more to operate and needs longer runways, which can rule out some airports.

How far can the ACJ319 fly nonstop?

In VIP configuration the range is about 6,000 nautical miles (11,112 km), and the ACJ319neo goes slightly further. That covers New York to London (around 5,570 km), as well as Los Angeles to Paris (around 9,586 km), while sectors such as Doha to London (around 5,214 km) are routine.
