History

Embraer unveiled the Praetor 600 in October 2018 as a development of the Legacy 500. The main change is fuel: two extra tanks in the fuselage belly hold 2,928 lb more than the Legacy 500 carries, which takes the range with IFR reserves to 4,018 nautical miles. Embraer built it for customers who wanted a mid-size jet with a much longer reach.

Flight testing began on 31 March 2018, and by October three test aircraft had logged 300 hours between them. Brazil's aviation authority, ANAC, certified the aircraft in April 2019. FAA and EASA approval followed in May, and the first delivery was made later that year, bringing what Embraer called its most capable mid-size jet into service.

The Praetor 600 keeps the technology of the Legacy 500 and adds intercontinental range. Two Honeywell HTF7500E turbofans power it, and the flight deck uses Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics. Embraer also fitted Active Turbulence Reduction, a system intended to smooth the ride in rough air, which made it the first super midsize jet to offer the feature.

FAQ

How much further does the Praetor 600 fly than the Legacy 500?

About 1,650 km further. The Praetor 600 is rated for 4,018 nautical miles (7,441 km), while the Legacy 500 manages around 3,125 nautical miles (5,788 km). In practice, that means London to New York can be flown direct in the Praetor 600, whereas the Legacy 500 would normally need to stop for fuel on the way.

How many passengers does the Praetor 600 seat?

Standard layouts seat eight or nine, and the maximum is 12. The cabin is 8.20 m long and 2.08 m wide, with 1.83 m of headroom, so passengers can stand. Its swivel seats recline fully for sleeping on overnight sectors, and the baggage hold takes around 10 suitcases.

How fast does the Praetor 600 cruise?

It cruises at 466 knots (863 km/h), which is competitive among super midsize jets, with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.83. For reference, a London to Paris sector takes roughly 40 minutes, and New York to Washington DC about 35.

Which city pairs can the Praetor 600 connect without stopping?

Its range with IFR reserves is 4,018 nautical miles (7,441 km). That covers London to New York, London to Dubai and Miami to São Paulo in one leg. As with any jet, the exact figure on the day depends on passenger load and winds.

What sets the Praetor 600 apart from other super midsize jets?

Embraer describes it as the first and only jet in its category with Active Turbulence Reduction, which counters the effect of rough air on the cabin. It also holds a lower cabin altitude than its competitors, and its runway performance lets it use demanding airports that are out of reach for many rival super midsize jets.
