History
Gulfstream began the G650 programme in 2005 with two targets: the highest speed and the greatest range of any business jet it had built. The company kept the project out of public view until March 2008, when it unveiled the aircraft as the new head of its range.
A prototype made its first flight from Savannah on 25 November 2009, powered by two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines. In April 2011 a test aircraft was destroyed in an accident during high-speed taxi trials, and flight testing stopped for several weeks while Gulfstream's engineers resolved the causes. Testing restarted in May 2011.
Seven years after work started, the FAA certified the G650 in September 2012, and the first customer aircraft was handed over that December. When it entered service, it was the fastest civilian aircraft a charter client could book, and its top operating speed was Mach 0.93.
In 2014 Gulfstream added the G650ER, which carries more fuel for longer sectors. The two versions stayed in production for more than a decade, and close to 600 had been delivered when the line closed in February 2025. Many of the city pairs they fly once needed a fuel stop.

FAQ
How far can a G650 fly before it needs fuel?
With IFR reserves, its range is 7,000 nm (12,964 km), and its ferry range is 7,130 nm. That covers sectors such as New York to Dubai without a stop. The Bombardier Global 6000 is rated at 6,000 nm, so the G650 has about 1,000 nm more reach, which can turn a two-leg trip in the Global into a direct flight.
How many passengers does the G650 seat, and how much room do they have?
Typical layouts seat 11 to 18, and the aircraft is certified for 19. The cabin is 16.34 m long and 2.59 m wide, with 1.95 m of headroom, and it can be divided into as many as four separate areas so that passengers can work, eat and sleep apart. There is space for about 14 suitcases and 14 pieces of hand luggage.
How fast does the G650 fly?
It cruises at 516 knots (956 km/h), and its maximum operating speed is Mach 0.93: close to the speed of sound, but subsonic. Going beyond Mach 1 would need a different wing, engines and structure. A G650 holds the record for the fastest westbound flight around the world by an aircraft that is not supersonic, at 41 hours and seven minutes.
Can the G650 use smaller airports close to city centres?
Gulfstream says the G650's maximum takeoff weight, just under 100,000 lb (45,178 kg), keeps it eligible for smaller business airports such as Teterboro in New Jersey, close to New York City. That lets passengers avoid congested hubs like JFK and Chicago O'Hare. Since 2019 the G650 family has held FAA approval for steep approaches, which allows it to fly into London City Airport.
What separates the G650 from the G650ER?
The ER carries more fuel. Gulfstream announced it in 2014 at EBACE, the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition, and with full tanks it flies roughly 500 nm (926 km) further than the standard aircraft. If your longest leg sits within the G650's 7,000 nm, either version will do the job, and the choice usually comes down to which one is available.
What does it cost to charter a G650?
There is no fixed rate. The price depends on the route, your travel dates, where the nearest suitable aircraft is positioned and which operator flies it. Our advisors price every trip individually, so the quickest way to an accurate figure is to send us the route and dates along with the number of passengers.
